With the COVID crisis spreading fear and panic, many people are wondering if their favorite destinations will ever reopen again. What countries are open or closed? Who requires COVID tests before entry? These are all important questions and I’m here to break them down for you.
This blog post discusses what travelers can expect in regards to some of the most popular tourist destinations around the world.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several countries have imposed temporary travel restrictions on United States citizens or persons arriving from the United States. Here is a breakdown of what each country is asking.
Argentina – As of 17 March 2021: Admission refused, except residents.
Austria – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Australia – Admission refused.
Bahamas – Admission permitted with prior completion of Travel Health Visa Application, which requires a negative COVID-19 test.
Bangladesh – Requires negative COVID-19 test. Home quarantine is required even with a negative result
Belgium – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Bermuda – Each passenger 10 and older must apply for travel authorization. Negative COVID-19 test required that is no more than five days old
Botswana – Negative COVID-19 test required. Quarantine required for those who are not tested.
Brazil – Negative COVID-19 test required.
Brunei – Admission refused.
Bulgaria – Admission refused unless exempted from the entry restrictions ordered by the Ministry of Health on 3 August 2020. Long-term visa or residence permit holders are permitted to enter but must self-isolate for 14 days unless arriving from the EU/EEA after a two-week stay there.
Cambodia – $2000 deposit required and negative COVID-19 test. $90 local health insurance must be bought on arrival
Canada – Admission refused for nonessential travel, land borders closed indefinitely
Chile – “affidavit of travelers” required and negative COVID-19 test required. Visitors also need health insurance.
China – Admission refused for nonessential travel. Admission granted to those with valid residence permits for work, family visitation, or personal emergencies; crew-members of international flights, vessels, or trains with valid visas; or those with diplomatic, service, or courtesy visas. Those with valid visas of any type issued after March 26, 2020, are not refused entry. All visa waiver policies suspended, including visa-free transit and visa-free entry to Hainan Province. All travelers entering on commercial flights are required to submit evidence of a negative RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 at least three days before boarding their flight. Other types of tests for the virus are not accepted.
Croatia – Negative COVID-19 test, certificate of vaccination, or proof of recovery from COVID-19 required.
Cyprus – Admission refused for travelers arriving from the US and some other countries.
Colombia – Negative COVID-19 test required
Costa Rica – Health Pass and proof of health insurance required for entry.
Czech Republic – Admission refused indefinitely due to EU travel ban
Denmark – Admission refused indefinitely, except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods. Entry refused into Greenland and Faroe Islands until April 13.
El Salvador – Negative COVID-19 test required
Estonia – Admission refused effective March 17. Right of entry will remain for citizens and those with a right of residence, as well as foreign citizens whose next of kin live in Estonia. Transit is allowed for foreigners not showing signs of COVID-19. A mandatory two-week quarantine will be set for anyone entering the country.
France – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Finland – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Georgia – Negative COVID-19 test required (except when presenting a document confirming two doses of any COVID-19 vaccination).
Germany – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Greece – Negative COVID-19 test of proof of vaccination required.
Guatemala – Negative COVID-19 test required
Hong Kong – Admission refused.
Honduras – Negative COVID-19 test required and online precheck form must be filled out
Hungary – Admission refused.
Iceland – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
India – Admission refused.
Indonesia – Admission refused.
Ireland – Self-isolation required unless COVID-19 test is negative on the 5th day if taken
Israel – Admission refused, except for new immigrants with an Aliyah visa. All arriving individuals must be tested at the airport. They must then be housed in a government-funded hotel or remain under home isolation for 10 days. Arrivals will then take a second test and upon confirmation of a negative result will be released from the isolation. If an arrival refuses then the arrival must remain in isolation for an additional 4 days.
Italy – Negative COVID-19 test required.
Japan – Admission refused, except those with valid re-entry documentation and those meeting certain family, professional, or medical criteria.
Jordan – Valid health insurance, a PCR test taken on arrival, and a tracking app download are required for entry.
Latvia – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Liechtenstein – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Lithuania – Admission refused, except for those with a residence permit.
Luxembourg – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Macau – Admission refused.
Malaysia – Admission refused for nonresidents. Quarantine required for residents.
Malta – 14-day quarantine required.
Mexico – No negative COVID-19 test is required. Admission refused for those traveling by land
Mongolia – Admission refused.
Netherlands – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
New Zealand – Admission refused for nonresidents. 14-day managed quarantine required for residents.
North Korea – Admission refused.
Norway – Admission refused.
Oman – Tourist visas suspended indefinitely.
Pakistan-required to present a PCR test conducted within the 72 hours prior to commencement of travel to Pakistan
Panama – Admission refused.
Philippines – Admission refused, except spouses and children of Filipino nationals with a valid visa.
Poland – Admission refused, except for those possessing residence or work permits. 14 days quarantine required.
Russia – Admission refused.
Singapore – Admission refused for nonresidents. Quarantine required for residents.
Slovakia – Admission refused for nonresidents. Quarantine required for residents.
Slovenia – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
South Africa – Negative COVID-19 test required
South Korea – 14-day quarantine required even with a negative COVID-19 test
Spain – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods. Restrictions for vaccinated Americans will be lifted on 7 June 2021.
Sri Lanka – Negative COVID-19 test required and you must stay at an approved hotel and resort for 14 days
Suriname – Admission refused.
Sweden – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Switzerland – Admission refused except residents, family members of EU citizens, medical personnel, and people responsible for the transport of goods.
Taiwan – Negative COVID-19 test and 2-week quarantine required on arrival. Effective since 1 March 2021.
Tajikistan – Admission refused.
Thailand – Admission refused, except for residents.
Tunisia – Proof of negative PCR test and mandatory 14-day quarantine on arrival required. If a test is taken on the 7th day and it is negative, you can leave quarantine early
Turkmenistan – Admission refused.
Ukraine – Self-quarantine or COVID-19 test required on arrival.
UAE – Visa issuance suspended for non-diplomatic passport holders.
UK – Self-Isolation required.
Venezuela – Admission refused.
Vietnam – Admission refused.
