If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans, there’s really only one place you should consider laying your head at night, and that’s the historic Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery. I’ve stayed in countless hotels around the world, but this one’s unique in many ways. If you’re an art lover, this is definitely a hotel you’ll appreciate. Backstory – The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery building began serving the Port of New Orleans way back in 1854, long before it was a hotel. At the time, it was a coffee warehouse and was later transformed into a chandlery (or general wholesale business). Art and Community – The Old No. 77 Hotel partners with the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, a tuition-free high school founded by artists, educators and community activists that offer students from nine parishes around New Orleans intensive academic and arts instruction. (NOCCA’s roster of alumni includes Harry Connick, Jr., Terence Blanchard, and many others.) The hotel showcases student works of arts to help raise awareness for their mission. You’ll see art from student painters, printmakers, photographers, designers, collage and graphic artists featured in the guestrooms, some of which are even available for purchase in the hotel. Your Stay – The hotel has a ridiculous number of room types to choose from! Whether you’re traveling for business, romance, or with the family, they have a room to accommodate you. Each has somewhat of a loft feel with exposed brick walls, signature blue ceilings, beautiful wood floors, and mid-century modern minimalism. And they have a pillow menu! Often hotel pillows leave me with a pain in the neck, but here, I was able to choose from a variety of specialty pillow types.

The hotel also has two dining options on site: Tout La, where you can grab an expertly crafted coffee, pastries or a mimosa, and Compère Lapin, the award-winning restaurant with influences from the Gulf region and the Caribbean, as well as French and Italian cuisine.
